How to open a DXF file with a free DXF reader

The fastest DXF reader is the one in your browser: drop the .dxf file on this page and it renders on your device, with nothing uploaded. ASCII and binary DXF from any AutoCAD version are supported. This guide covers the steps, the desktop programs that open DXF, and the AutoCAD prompts that confuse people.

Open a DXF file online: step by step

  1. Go to the DXF viewer page or the home page; both run the same engine.
  2. Drop the .dxf file on the drop zone. DXF needs no conversion step, so even large files appear quickly.
  3. Zoom and pan to inspect the drawing. The status bar shows how many entities were loaded, which is a quick sanity check against an export that silently dropped objects.
  4. Toggle layers in the Layers panel, measure a distance, then print or export to PDF, SVG or PNG if you need a copy for someone without CAD.

Because the file stays in the tab, this is a safe way to check a DXF someone emailed you before opening it in a full CAD program. For deep DXF topics such as entity types and version flags, the sister site dxfviewer.app goes further; this page keeps to opening the file.

Chrome users can also install the DXF Viewer extension, which opens .dxf links in the viewer directly. The extension handles DXF only; DWG support in it has not shipped.

What program opens DXF files

DXF is Autodesk's text-based exchange format, so almost every CAD and vector tool reads it. The difference is how much of the drawing survives. These are the usual choices:

ProgramCostPlatformGood for
DWG Viewer (browser)FreeAnyViewing, measuring, PDF/SVG/PNG export, privacy
LibreCADFree, open sourceWindows, macOS, LinuxEditing 2D DXF; cannot open DWG
QCADFree community buildWindows, macOS, Linux2D drafting with DXF in and out
InkscapeFree, open sourceWindows, macOS, LinuxImporting DXF outlines into vector art; splines and text may change
FreeCADFree, open sourceWindows, macOS, LinuxBringing 2D DXF profiles into 3D modeling
Autodesk DWG TrueViewFreeWindowsOfficial reader; opens DXF and DWG
AutoCAD, BricsCAD, nanoCADCommercialWindows (some macOS)Full editing

Laser cutters, CNC software and embroidery tools also import DXF, usually only lines, arcs and polylines. If a DXF looks wrong in one of those, open it in the viewer first to confirm the geometry is there, then check which entity types the target program accepts.

Can you open DXF in AutoCAD?

Yes. In AutoCAD use OPEN, change the file type filter at the bottom of the dialog to DXF, and pick the file. The DXFIN command does the same from the command line. AutoCAD then shows the drawing as if it were a DWG; use SAVEAS to keep it as DWG.

If the command line says Press ENTER to continue while opening a DXF, AutoCAD found entries it could not read and is listing them. Press Enter, then run AUDIT and answer Yes to fix errors. The usual cause is a DXF written by a non-Autodesk exporter with an incomplete header or table section.

How to get, download or create a DXF file

A DXF normally comes out of a CAD program: in AutoCAD use SAVEAS and choose a DXF version; in LibreCAD, QCAD and FreeCAD use Save As or Export. To turn an existing DWG into DXF, DWG TrueView and the free ODA File Converter do it in batch on Windows; the steps are on DWG to DXF.

The browser viewer converts DWG to DXF internally in order to render it, but a Download .dxf button is planned rather than shipped, so do not count on it for conversion today.

Pick the DXF version to match the reader. R12 DXF is the most portable for laser and CNC software because it has no splines or modern entities; 2018 DXF keeps everything AutoCAD can draw. The version flags are explained on DXF versions.

How to combine multiple DXF files into one

A viewer shows one file at a time; merging is a CAD task. In AutoCAD or BricsCAD open the first DXF, then use INSERT or ATTACH to bring in the others as blocks and EXPLODE them if you want raw geometry. In LibreCAD and QCAD, File > Import (or Insert) does the same. Watch the units: a DXF drawn in inches inserted into one drawn in millimeters comes in 25.4 times too small.

After merging, open the result in the viewer and compare the entity count against the sum of the originals; a large gap means something was dropped.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a DXF file for free?

Drop it on this page; the browser renders it with nothing uploaded. On the desktop, LibreCAD and QCAD are free editors that open DXF, and DWG TrueView is a free reader on Windows.

What opens DXF files on Windows and Mac?

Any modern browser with this viewer, plus LibreCAD, QCAD, Inkscape, FreeCAD and AutoCAD. Windows users also have DWG TrueView. See open DXF on Mac for the Mac specifics.

Can I open DXF in AutoCAD?

Yes. Use OPEN and switch the file type to DXF, or run DXFIN. If AutoCAD asks you to press Enter to continue, the file has errors; run AUDIT afterward.

How do I get a DXF file from a DWG?

Use SAVEAS in AutoCAD and pick a DXF format, or batch-convert with DWG TrueView or the ODA File Converter. The browser viewer does not yet offer a DXF download.

How to view DXF files online without installing anything?

Open dwgviewer.app or dxfviewer.app in the browser and drop the file. No account, no install, and the file never leaves your computer.

Is there a free app to open DXF files on a phone?

The browser viewer works on iPhone and Android for small and medium DXF files. For large files use a desktop.
