Convert PDF to DXF

PDF to DXF is the shortest path from a PDF drawing to an editable CAD file, because DXF is an open text format that free tools can write directly. This viewer does not perform the conversion (it opens DXF and DWG, it does not create them), so this page walks through Inkscape, AutoCAD, dedicated converters, and tracing for scans, and ends with how to verify the DXF in the browser.

Why DXF is the easier target

DWG is a closed binary format that only a few libraries can write. DXF is a documented ASCII format, so Inkscape, LibreCAD, QCAD, and dozens of small utilities can produce it without licensing anything. That is why almost every free "PDF to CAD" tool writes DXF, and why PDF to DXF is a one-step job where PDF to DWG is two.

The DXF you get is only as good as the PDF. A vector PDF (exported from CAD) converts into real lines and arcs. A scanned PDF converts into traced approximations. Zoom to 800 percent and try to select text: sharp lines and selectable text mean vector; blurry edges mean scan. More on that distinction on the DXF file page.

How to convert PDF to DXF with Inkscape (free)

  1. Install Inkscape 1.x (Windows, macOS, Linux). Open it and choose File > Open, pick the PDF.
  2. In the PDF Import dialog select the page, choose "Poppler/Cairo import" if you want text kept as text, or "Internal import" to turn everything into paths. Click OK.
  3. Select all (Ctrl+A). If text must come through as geometry, use Path > Object to Path; if filled areas should be outlines, use Path > Stroke to Path only where needed.
  4. Check Document Properties (Ctrl+Shift+D) and set the display unit to mm or inches so the DXF scale makes sense.
  5. File > Save As, file type "Desktop Cutting Plotter (AutoCAD DXF R14)". In the export options tick "use LWPOLYLINE type of line output" and choose the base unit.
  6. Open the DXF in your CAD program and scale by reference: measure a known dimension and scale everything so it matches.

Inkscape writes a flat DXF: no blocks, no dimensions, curves as polylines or splines. That is normal and enough for laser cutters, CNC routers, and further editing in CAD.

PDF to DXF in AutoCAD and in paid converters

AutoCAD 2017 and later import vector PDFs with PDFIMPORT. Choose "Use PDF layers" when the PDF came from AutoCAD, then SAVEAS and pick a DXF format (R2018 ASCII DXF for modern software, R12 DXF for old CNC controllers). AutoCAD gives the cleanest text, because TrueType text stays text and PDFSHXTEXT rebuilds SHX text from outlines.

Scan2CAD and Able2Extract are the two names people search for most. Both read vector and raster PDFs, both do batch runs, and both output DXF and DWG. Aide PDF to DXF Converter and pdf2cad are smaller tools focused on vector PDFs with good dashed-line recognition. Try the trial on your real file before buying, because results vary a lot with how the PDF was produced.

A "3D PDF" is a special case: the 3D model inside is stored as U3D or PRC, and converters extract nothing useful from it. Ask for a STEP file instead and see STEP to DXF.

Scanned PDF: tracing instead of converting

For scans, export the page as a 300 dpi PNG, then run Path > Trace Bitmap in Inkscape (single scan, brightness cutoff, speckle removal) or use Scan2CAD's centerline mode, which produces single lines rather than outlines. Save the traced paths as DXF exactly as above. The complete recipe, including how to get the best trace, is on PNG to DXF.

Plan for manual work after tracing: text comes back as outlines, dashed lines come back as dashes, and nothing is snapped or orthogonal. A clean scan of a simple plan traces well; a faded blueprint does not.

What to check in the DXF

  • Scale and units. Measure one dimension. Inkscape works in px at 96 per inch unless you set units, so scale factors of 0.2646 or 3.78 are a sign the unit was left at px.
  • Entity count. A simple plan that produced 50,000 entities means every dash and text stroke became a separate line; use a converter with line type and text recognition instead.
  • Layers. Expect one layer from Inkscape and several from AutoCAD or paid converters.
  • Closed shapes. For cutting, outlines must be closed polylines; look for gaps at corners.

Drag the DXF onto dwgviewer.app to run these checks without CAD: the layers panel, the measure tool, and the entity count in the status bar are enough, and the file stays on your computer. For DXF-specific depth, the sister site dxfviewer.app uses the same engine. See also how to open a DXF file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to DXF?

Open the PDF in Inkscape, select all, and save as AutoCAD DXF R14. In AutoCAD, use PDFIMPORT and then SAVEAS with a DXF file type.

Can you convert PDF to DXF for free?

Yes. Inkscape is free and converts vector PDFs to DXF on Windows, macOS, and Linux. For scanned PDFs, Inkscape's Trace Bitmap or the free edition of WinTopo does the tracing.

How do I convert PDF to DXF in Inkscape?

File > Open the PDF, pick Poppler/Cairo import, select all, then File > Save As with the type Desktop Cutting Plotter (AutoCAD DXF R14). Tick LWPOLYLINE output.

How do I convert PDF to DXF for SolidWorks?

SolidWorks does not import PDF geometry. Convert the PDF to DXF with Inkscape or AutoCAD first, then use Insert > DXF/DWG into a sketch.

Does PDF to DXF keep layers and text?

Layers survive only if the PDF was published with layers and the converter supports them (AutoCAD, Able2Extract, pdf2cad). TrueType text usually survives; SHX text becomes outlines.

Is a PDF to DXF converter online safe to use?

For a non-confidential file it is fine; CloudConvert and Convertio work. The PDF is uploaded, so keep confidential drawings in local tools.
